Venice, Italy

I had the incredible privilege to travel to Venice, Italy this past September. It was the experience of a lifetime. 10 days of drawing... I have just started going through the sketchbooks in chronological order. Here are some drawings from the first day.

One cannot go to Venice without drawing the pigeons.

The caterpillar provides food for the birds and small animals. It is considered the biggest agricultural pest as it munches on the new spring leaves. Although a pest, when it metamorphose into a butterfly it helps to pollinate flowers.

Tappan Zee Bridge

The old Tappan Zee Bridge ( over the Hudson River) in front of the massive construction of the new twin cable - stayed Tappan Zee Bridge. That construction site looks like a Rube Goldberg , I had to stop... I couldn't resist all those juicy lines.

Little Fish

For my required MFA-IA Presentation of Practice at Goddard College, I created Little Fish; an interactive puppet show showcasing the effects nitrogen pollution has on aquatic life. The story is centered around Millers Pond, a community pond in Smithtown, NY.

To tell the complex story of nitrogen pollution I developed Scuppets (sculpted puppets) to address nitrogen runoff into Millers Pond, a pond in my local community (Nissequogue River/Smithtown Bay Watershed).

Millers Pond’s “Lady of the Lake” attends to the fish living in the pond suffering from Nitrogen’s infiltration. How will this be solved? Will Nitrogen have to go on a diet? This is what the audience has to find out. The show concludes with a procession around Millers Pond.

The Urban Sketching Handbook

Happy to featured in Urban Sketching Handbook: Reportage and Documentary Drawing: Tips and Techniques for Drawing on Location by Veronica Lawlor.

The drawing featured is a portrait of WWII veteran Tom Dugan. I sketched him during an interview for an oral history project about the men who served aboard the USS Intrepid.
