The sculptures, Witness I, and Witness III evolved from my own witnessing to the ecological changes happening to the local pond in my community. Everyday as I went past the pond to my studio I witnessed the deterioration and the cumulative cycle of change brought by the seasons, which ultimately ended in fish kills by late summer from the loss of oxygen in the water, also known as aquatic hypoxia. My sculptures, Witness I and Witness III illustrates this ecological imbalance.

As the viewer moves through the sculpture, Witness I, one will notice the visual symbol of the ecological triangle representing the 3 balancing forces in the eco system.

The sun sits atop with its constant companion, moon, stirring the atmosphere.

Through human activity directly or indirectly the eco system is affected. One will see moving to Witness III this disruption of balance distorts the triangle, representing imbalance thus, destroying the ecosystem.

Staying Connected

& Expressing Ourselves

Through Art:

What story do you want to tell?
What emotion do you want to express?

A hands on, half-day conference at The Heckscher Museum of Arts, Superintendent’s Day Conference 2020.

Staying connected and expressing ourselves through art is more important than ever before! K-12 teachers are invited to join us for this half-day conference dedicated to seeing the positive opportunities amidst the challenges this school year brings.

Participants created a mixed media sculpture as they re-thought how line, shape, and movement can effectively communicate ideas and express emotion!

Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at
The Heckscher Museum 2021

This annual exhibition features extraordinary works of art created by Long Island high school students. 331 young artists from 56 high schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties submitted artwork for jurying, with 83 selected by Karli Wurzelbacher, Heckscher Museum Curator, and artist and guest juror Melissa Misla. This school year has been like no other, challenging art teachers the Museum to rethink what art education looks like. As you will see, students rose to the occasion, participating in virtual field trips and creating powerful artwork that speaks to all we have experienced and learned.

All of the exhibition’s components, including artist statements written by each student and images of artwork from the Museum’s exhibitions that inspired students, are available online.

Student Artist, Vivian Wang, selected Witness III as inspiration for her piece, The Human Game. Congratulations to Vivian for her most impressive work.
